The Honor/Shame Bible

Here at the Honor/Shame Bible, we are dedicated to exploring and the different types of honor/shame societies, thereby unraveling the mysteries and miscommunications that often happen between individualistic modernity and ancient history. As it turns out, the modern debates about the "existence of God" is historically tone-deaf. Ancient people (and people to this day) are still very much concerned with questions of honor and shame, and everyone "stumbles over the stumbling stone" of the misunderstandings that arise between different cultures over the different types honor and shame, which has historically been connected with the divine (and the pantheon of gods that most cultures have believed in).

We aim to help people understand:

  • the grand story of the Bible in its social context
  • the tension between different types of honor and shame societies
  • the hopes and fears of ancient peoples and what motivated them
  • the misunderstandings that have arisen from the language and metaphors (immersed in honor and shame concepts) of ancient peoples

Unlike other organizations/websites that focus on honor and shame, we have no religious aim. We welcome people from all backgrounds (religious, secular, doubting, critical, believing, etc). We seek to honor the grand (and ancient) story of the Bible by elaborating the background which illuminates it's meaning. We recommend to visitors new to the topic the book: "The Vital Villain -- Adversity and Triumph for the Glory of the Story"

Author & Founder of the Honor/Shame Bible Website

Jonathan E Thomas is the founder of the Honor/Shame Society and is the author of the seminal book, The Vital Villain - Adversity and Triumph for the Glory of the Story. Being lucky to grow up in a small town in the 80s and 90s with great family and friends and a wonderful church community, he developed a passion for the Bible and the many questions it provoked. At just age 20, Jonathan had a sense that that grand message of the Bible had been lost in trite cliches and condescending media. At the time, he had considered writing a book, "The Great Cliche". Ultimately though, his new book, The Vital Villain, is the ultimate culmination of those original questions. Although his persistent early questions made some uncomfortable, he is grateful for this upbringing that ultimately inspired those questions.

Jonathan is from Saskatoon, SK, Canada. When not reading or writing, he loves to play guitar and go hiking with his faithful border collie.
